Incredibly simple to use, this kit allows a surveyor to test for the presence of certain chlorides and nitrates which may or may not be generated by the evaporation of soil-water (otherwise known as 'rising damp') on wall surfaces, i.e. plaster and wallpaper. As long as the wall in question has been undisturbed for a number of years, telling results and highly useful information can be generated by such a test.
Each test (the kit contains ten in total) consists of two sachets of chemicals in precisely the correct amounts, a container of distilled water and two measuring containers for carrying out the test. The test takes no time at all with a colour change indicating the presence (or lack) of the harmful chlorides and nitrates.
It goes without saying that a truly in depth investigations of the cause of damp in a building should be carried out without relying solely on a salts test such as this. However, these tests are, within the professional community, a highly regarded indicator of long-entrenched soil water evaporation.
