Siemens could create over 2,000 jobs in Yorkshire

Siemens have released plans to build a new train factory in Goole, in the East Riding of Yorkshire. The £200m investment, which is subject to investment conditions and success in future orders, could create up to 700 skilled engineering jobs and a further 1700 indirect jobs in the UK supply chain.
Plans include manufacturing and commissioning stable sidings, offices, buildings and warehouses. Maier said the company had looked “up and down the country” for the right location, before deciding it would be located next to Junction 36 on the M62, at the Goole 36 development.
Juergen Maier, the Chief Executive of Siemens UK, said “We’ve said for some time that future success for Siemens in the rail industry would see us opening a rail manufacturing plant here and this announcement provides additional substance to those words.
"This investment has the potential to have a tremendous impact on the Yorkshire economy and the North of England as a whole, ensuring that the benefits of infrastructure spending are spread widely and helping to ensure the ongoing development of the UK rail industry.”
The transport secretary, Chris Grayling, said that the decision to invest in a new plant underlines the benefits of the government's decision to improve and modernise transport in Northern England.
“From delivering brand new and refurbished trains through the great north rail project, our plans to upgrade the transpennine route to our investment in Yorkshire’s roads, we are driving forward job creation, economic growth and unlocking the potential of the northern powerhouse.”
Although there is no set timescale for when the factory will open, Siemens plan to begin building the site later this year, and predict that it should be up and running within 2 years.
