Charity

Here at The Tape Store we understand the importance of giving back to society and contributing towards those causes more worthy than our own. As a result, every year we take on board two charities, one large, one small that mean something to us and our customers.

Whilst we ourselves have of course donated, we invite all of you to read the description of each charity below, take a look at the incredibly valuable work they do and, if you feel able, to donate to one or both of these hugely worthy causes.

A cause close to the heart of each and every one of us, in 2008 alone around 310,000 people were diagnosed with cancer in the UK. This is a truly staggering figure especially when you consider that 1 in 21 women and 1 in 36 men will have contracted cancer before the age of 50.

With statistics like these this is an issue we ignore at our peril. The larger of the two charities being supported by The Tape Store this year, Cancer Research UK’s aim is simple; to save lives from cancer. More people are beating cancer than ever before thanks to their work and the support of people like you.

Cancer Research UK works in the areas where they can make the most impact. Through research they support the work of over 4,000 scientists, doctors and nurses across the UK. Through communication they work to prevent cancer and to help people cope with its effects by providing information for cancer patients and their families, health professionals and the general public. Through influencing public policy they strive to keep cancer at the top of the UK’s health agenda.

Not much more need be said about this charity. There’s not one of us out there who won’t be affected by cancer in our lifetime, be it personally or through a close friend or relative. So please, dig deep and donate to this, the most worthy of causes.

A true gentleman and a friend of The Tape Store, Matthew Good passed away on June 26th 2011 whilst running for charity. Aged only 33, he was the Joint Managing Director and the 6th generation to work in the family business, John Good & Sons Ltd.

The company has made various charitable donations over time but, in early 2011 the family decided to create something new; something ground breaking in the world of social enterprise. Matthew decided to create a foundation that would allow employees and others both the time and financial resources to support charitable causes they are passionate about with the firm itself guaranteeing a % of its profits annually.

Matthew was dedicated to the Foundation’s concept, a venture that embodied his principles, values and commitment to those less fortunate than most of us. Following Matt’s death it was only natural to name the Foundation after him.

This year will see the Foundation strategically funding research into the effect of heat exhaustion in athletes. Currently a condition of which very little is known, there are currently no tests or theory on why some people die suddenly when faced with it rather than simply pass out. The Foundation is going to try to find that answer.

This is an incredibly worthy cause and one that the team here at The Tape Store are proud to support. We would urge you, whether it’s £1 or £100, to make a donation to the Matthew Good Foundation and show your support for a man and a cause that deserve the utmost recognition.
