For the minimal additional cost over their 3m little brothers, the additional two metres of length make these tapes so much more versatile than their shorter counterparts.

That said and done, however, when you start looking deeper into the 5m tape category you'll start to see a very real increase in quality and, crucially, innovation. Not seen in many of the shorter or indeed longer tapes on the market, 5m/16ft short tape measures include some of the most innovative and useful features on the market today.

The Stanley FatMax Xtreme 5m/16ft, for example, features a 32mm wide blade, a 4m standout distance, a practically indestructible case and a hook that makes measuring from above, below or the side a cinch. The Stanley Leverlock is one of the few tapes on the market today that grips the blade wherever you extend it to... rather than stopping the blade as with most autolock tapes, the Leverlock's button actually releases it. The Advent Vice Versa, as another example, features measurements on both the top and the bottom of the blade whilst the Advent 2-in-1 Gap Tape makes taking internal measurements just as easy as taking external measurements.

Due to the sheer number of 5m tapes sold, manufacturers can justify spending vast quantities of time and money on research and development to make this particular length of tape one of the most innovative, accurate and durable types on the market.
