Surveyors Tape Measures

No surveyor, site engineer, civil or structural engineer or, for that matter, construction professional in general, should ever be without a long or 'surveyors tape' whilst on site. No substitute for the conventional short or 'pocket tape', these tools are generally 20m or more in length ranging to around the 100m or even 200m mark. They are the essential companion for anyone involved in surveying, setting out, construction, appraisals or valuations.

Surveyors tapes come with a range of blade materials ideal for different purposes. Fibreglass is the most common material used for long tape blades due to its durability, accuracy and, crucially, its resistance to water, tearing and stretching. But steel surveyors tapes are still very popular and far better suited to certain applications. Surveyors tapes are even available in stainless steel although not many manufacturers offer such products. Only you will know which one's right for you!

Hook types vary significantly from one manufacturer and model to another but, on the whole, a surveyor's tape will use a metal (frequently coated or stainless steel) hook that folds away for safety whilst extended to hook around an item or anchor into the ground.

Surveyors tape measures also come with two types of cases. The closed reel variety uses a more familiar design whereby the entire blade is encased within a plastic or steel shell thereby protecting the blade against accidental cuts etc. The open reel type, whilst more open to this type of damage, sees the blade held within a frame-style case which is not only lighter and frequently easier to carry, it also allows for much easier cleaning and prevents jamming when rewinding dirty tapes.

Rather than using an automatic return mechanism as with most pocket or Short Tapes, surveyors' tape measures generally have manually operated, external cranks on the side of the case. This allows for rapid, controlled winding which, in turn, helps prevent jamming and damage to the blade.
