Fibreglass Tape Measures
When it comes to long tapes, frequently referred to as 'surveyors tape measures, the most commonly used material is fibreglass. Now we're not talking about the case or body of the tape, we're talking about the blade - the section of the tape that reels in and out of the body and is graded in metric or metrical and imperial measurements.
There are a number of reasons why fibreglass long tapes are so popular and why they are so commonly referred to as surveyors' tapes...
- Fibreglass tape measures frequently (although not always!) come enclosed within what's commonly called an open reel or frame case. This allows the tape blade to be cleaned very easily. With a more conventional closed case arrangement, when the blade is pulled back inside the case, any dirt on it will be reeled back in along with it. Over time and use, dirt can clog up the mechanism making it difficult to use and, on occasions, causing it to jam entirely.
- Linked to the point above, fibreglass tapes (being water proof and therefore fully immersible) can be rinsed under a hose or tap or, alternatively, can be fully immersed to clean. Not something that would be particularly advisable with a steel tape for obvious reasons!
- Fibreglass tapes are heat resistant, stretch resistant and tear resistant, frequently far more so than their steel counterparts. We all know hwo easy it is for a long tape to become snagged on anything from a nail, a branch or even a workmate's foot! In such an occasion a fibreglass should stand up to far greater stresses and strains than your average steel long tape.
